I recently returned from a tour of aging services in Israel led by Rabbi Dayle Friedman. I was the only attorney on the tour. The vast majority of the 17 other tour participants work as professionals in pastoral care. I witnessed the beauty of how the pastoral care professionals interacted with Jewish, Muslim, and Christian seniors, many whom were in need of long-term care. I saw the love in their eyes and the positive response from those they comforted and brought meaning to. We, as attorneys, are trained to solve problems our clients present to us. Sometimes, we forget that we cannot solve all the issues. As a result of my 10 day trip to Israel with wonderful, caring individuals, I have a new found respect for the value of spirituality for older adults.
